Walkers were guided through a warmup before they took to the streets of Burien.  WABI-RibbonCutting062913-42  WNT-020313-Group 5TH

Admit it…you’ve always wanted to be in a parade.

Now’s your big chance! Join other WABI-ists in Burien’s Independence Day Parade. Raid your closet or the local thrift shop and wear your WABI colors proudly (orange and green). Pump up your tires or put on your walking shoes and parade behind the WABI banner, either on your bike or on foot. Decorate your bike! Wear funky costumes! …Or not. Just come be a “WABI-ist On Parade”.

The parade will be from 3 pm to 5 pm on Friday, July 4, following a route of approximately two miles through downtown Burien. (View the Parade Route map.)

To participate:

  • Best to walk or ride your bike into town. If you drive, park on the outskirts and walk in. Note that major roads (Ambaum, 152nd, 153rd, etc.) will be closed, so motorized access and parking will be limited.
  • 12:45 – WABI will gather in the empty lot at the east side of the Post Office, along 6th Ave., between SW 150th and SW 151st.
  • 1:00 – WABI President, Maureen Hoffmann, will go to the registration table to sign in and receive the staging area assignment.
  • 1:15 – Maureen will return to the WABI meetup area and lead the group, on foot/bike, to our designated staging area.
  • IF YOU ARRIVE AT THE MEETUP LOCATION AND WE HAVE ALREADY LEFT, GO TO THE REGISTRATION TABLE (On SW 151st, between 6th Ave. SW and 8th Ave. SW, behind the old Fire Dept. Station) AND ASK FOR OUR STAGING AREA, THEN COME FIND US.
  • Can’t find us?  Look for green and orange, or call 206-753-9485
  • 3:00 – The parade starts.
  • You’re not required to RSVP to join the parade, but if you want to add yourself to the pre-count, please send an email to info@wabiburien.org.

A few safety notes:

  • No booze before or during the parade — you will be kicked out!
  • Riding a bike (or trike or skateboard)? Wear a helmet — no helmet, no parade. (It’s the law AND it sets a good example for the kids.)
  • You’re encouraged to decorate your bike in WABI orange and green — just make sure your decorations aren’t flammable.
  • Kids are welcome to join the WABI group, if accompanied by an adult.  If you think your little ones can’t make the full two miles, feel free to join us for part of the parade.
  • Friendly, furry, four-legged WABI-ists may join in (but please come prepared to immediately clean up any dog-doo deposits.)
  • You may want to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, a jacket — who knows what Fourth of July weather will be like!
